Afflictions Eclipsed by Glory

Afflictions Eclipsed by Glory

Ephesians 6:12 instructs Christians that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Honestly, there have been times in my life when I felt so hurt that those holy words may as well have been written in a foreign language to me. Although I believed the words to be true, I didn’t understand how to apply their truth, and my struggles still felt very real. It is important to note that the trials we face are real. In Ephesians Paul is NOT saying our problems don’t exist or that we should somehow “just get over it.” Scripture instructs us that while the trials we are facing do exist they are not as we see them with our fleshly eyes. There is a very real spiritual realm outside of the tangible world in which we live. The fact that we can’t physically see it does not negate its impacts on our lives. Scripture calls us to equip ourselves biblically in the midst of these trials. We can start to obey by opening the Holy Word and by praying for wisdom and discernment for the things of God.

We act on what we believe, and our actions reveal our beliefs. Thus, if we truly believe God’s Word to be inerrant truth, our behavior will exemplify our faith. As we look to the Bible for answers one of the first scriptures we must come to terms with is 2 Timothy 3:16-17. We need to understand and believe that “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” In other words, we must understand and submit to the FACT that the entirety of scripture is the Word of God and therefore is TRUTH. It is then and only then that His Word will have its full effect in our lives.

As we enter into maturity in faith we can see His holy Word to be absolute truth which enables us to overcome our trials with joy. Remember the trial, existing on the natural plane, is still very real, but when we believe the Word of God and cling to the promises of scripture we can take omfort in the knowledge that He will never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6.) Now we can truly, with joy, begin the journey toward becoming the mature and complete man or woman of faith that He is calling us to become through the trials that we face. James 1:2-4 says Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. With spiritual eyes we can see that God has a purpose for the trial(s) we are facing. We will recognize that He allows or even brings about these difficult circumstances in our lives for our own benefit and for His Glory.

In 2 Corinthians 4:17-18 the bible has this to say about our trials “For momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” I love the song “How He Loves us” because of a particular verse: “These afflictions eclipsed by glory” When I first heard those words I was overwhelmed. I was taken back to an extremely hard time in my marriage. During this time the “afflictions” in my life, did not seem at all light or momentary. In fact I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders, and I felt like the burdens would never be lifted. In the spiritual realm I saw how my afflictions (those afflictions that are the reason I surrendered to Christ) were eclipsed by His Glory. Hallelujah!!!

His Word proved true to me as they always do. It wasn’t easy, but He was with me every step of the way. Even when I could not feel His presence, He was there protecting me, guiding me, sustaining me. We MUST be diligent to walk out our faith. We MUST confess our sins one to another and repent of the things that do not please Him. He is for us and ready to help us. He is full of love and mercy!

Praise you my King, for the reproof you provide in my life, for the wise correction you utilize to mature my faith, for training me in righteousness through your Word and for teaching me. Father, continue to birth in me a teachable spirit. Help me to walk in obedience to your Word and help me to be a vessel of your encouragement. Lord, thank you for constant reminders of the valleys you led me through and for creating beauty from ashes (Isaiah 61:3.)

Heather Eskridge received her certification in Biblical Counseling through the International Association of Biblical Counselors  in 2014, and shortly after heeded the Lord’s call to found Firm Foundation Biblical Counseling.

Using the Bible as her main source of counsel, Heather’s ministry focuses on equipping women with God’s truth which enables them to renew their minds.  She teaches women to walk in the freedom that Christ has freely promised every surrendered believer.

Heather believes the Bible is the inspired word of God, as stated in II Timothy 3:16-17.

Her scripture based teaching includes overcoming shame, guilt, self-pity, pride, anger, heartache, betrayal, grief, bitterness, depression, fear and resentment.

Heather helps women to examine current belief systems uncovering hidden lies and deceptions of the heart.

She uses scripture to teach Truth, retraining the mind to operate in the Truth of God’s Word. Galatians 5:1 tells us “It was for freedom that Christ set us free: therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery”.

Heather specializes in counseling women who have been devastated by sexual sin, such as a husband’s affair, addiction to pornography or same sex attraction.

Heather also works as a counselor for Pure Life Ministries. There she counsels women in a six month program called Over Comers at Home (OCAH).

Pure Life Ministries exists to serve Christian individuals and organizations dealing with sexual sin throughout the world by providing biblically based counseling, teaching resources, and public speaking ministry with the goal of leading Christians to victory over sexual sin through a deeper life in God. .

A staff member at Pure Life Ministries, Heather graduated the OCAH program in 2005. The Godly comfort she received combined with the wisdom and truth that was imparted to her as a counselee in the OCAH program prompted her to become a Biblical Counselor. She was called to pass along the blessings of Truth imparted to her, to other women in similar circumstances.

Heather is married with three children. Although her marriage has been through the storm, it has endured and remains a beacon of light.  She has learned to focus on Christ in the tempest, and now she provides a testimony of hope to hurting marriages rebuking hopelessness and shining light in dark places.

Statement of Purpose

To restore hope to the hopeless, release from darkness those bound in sin and/or in desperate situations. Bring peace to those living in fear, anxiety or depression by teaching individuals how to replace believed lies with the Truth of God’s Word. Imparting the Truth that God’s word has granted us everything pertaining to life and godliness teaching them to how to walk in the purpose they were created to live in through the use of God’s inspired Word, prayer and deliverance.

  1. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.  (II Timothy 3:16, 17)
  1. Seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and  (II Peter 1:3)
  2. The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because the LORD has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, (Isaiah 61:1)

What is Biblical Counseling?

Firm Foundation Biblical Counseling holds to 2 Timothy 3:16-17 which says “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness: that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work”.  In the above scripture passage, the Bible boldly declares that the scriptures in the bible are useful to teach, reprove, correct and training in righteousness and is in fact inspired by God Himself.  In Hebrews 4:12 it states “For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit both joints and marrow, and able to judge the intentions of the heart”. The bible is what is used to counsel; the Holy Spirit is actual counselor that is living and active.  Biblical counselors are trained to listen, prayerfully discern and point the counselee toward appropriate scripture pertaining to the issue.

Firm Foundation Biblical Counseling does not use psychology to counsel. At Firm Foundation Biblical Counseling it is believed the bible is fully equipped to handle what is says it can handle. That is can do what it says it can do. The counseling approach that uses psychology and scripture is called Integration. Integration uses scripture with the help of psychology to counsel. We choose to omit the use of psychology based on what scripture says in 2 Timothy 3:16-17 and Hebrews 4:12. Firm Foundation believes that God created the mind and provides principals, promises and direction regarding the mind through scripture. Psychology is the man made study of the mind. Since God created the mind, we look to God for His answers through scripture. Jesus said in Matthew 19:26 “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible”.  Therefore, the bible, which is the inspired Word of God- His very breath, is able to handle the human mind and behavior.

Of course certain behavior patterns can be determined through psychologies study of the mind, but those same behavioral causes and effects are exemplified in the bible too. By studying the characters throughout the bible we can see causes and effects of behavior that lead to all sorts of issues including depression, anxiety, drug and alcohol abuse, gambling addictions & adultery. You can look to Cain and Able to see root issues of the heart that caused Cain to kill Able. You can look to King David and his deep depression that was brought on by his sin with Bathsheba which spiraled out of control into murder. Throughout the bible there are countless examples to point to reasons for certain behaviors.

At Firm Foundation Biblical Counseling it is our goal to get to the root cause of all issues and to apply appropriate scripture that bring healing and restoration.

Biblical Counseling is counsel through the scriptures

Biblical Counseling is counsel through the scriptures found in God’s Holy Word, the Bible. Based on 2 Timothy 3:16-17 which reads,16 All Scripture is [a]inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for [b]training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. The Word of God clearly states, that His Word has the answers for everything we need in life. Any one can be helped by applying the Truth of the scripture to every day circumstances, even circumstances that are hard and don’t seem to make sense. Hebrews 4:12-13 says 12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do. There is power in the Word of God to accomplish much. Biblical Counseling is counsel according to the Word of God. God designed everyone with a purpose, when we begin to live according to the purpose we were created for we are naturally able to walk in freedom, joy and peace even though are circumstances are difficult.
