Practical Way to Develop a Devotional Life

Practical Way to Develop a Devotional Life

  1. Make Your Devotional Life Priority #1 in Your Daily Schedule

  • Purpose you heart, attitude, and actions that you will have quality time with God
  • Set aside a block of time, preferably in the morning, to pray and read the Bible
  • If you find this to be difficult, write out a schedule of what you do with your time throughout the day. You will find time, even if you have to wake-up earlier.
  • M. Bounds said, “If God is not the first in our thoughts and efforts in the morning, He will be last, during the day.
  1. Establish a Place to Pray

  • Find a place that is special and private where you can be alone with God
  • Find a secret place where lovers can meet to share time alone with one another. God will wait for you there, anticipating His time with you.
  1. Decide What You Will Do with Your Time There

  • Spend some time just worshiping Him, with or without music. Worship should always be right on the tip of our tongue as we consider who God is and the love He has manifested toward us in Jesus Christ.
  • Meditate on a Psalms like Psalm 103 or Psalm 119.
  • Spend time repenting of where you have fallen short.
  • Pray for the needs of others.
  • Read and pray over the Word of God.

  1. Devote Time to God Every Day

  • If you will be consistent, you will begin to develop a habit and will begin to look forward to your times alone with God.
  • From At the Altar of Sexual Idolatry: “The habit of prayer is never established in the person‘s life who is inconsistent. Until prayer is a regular part of one’s daily routine, it will always be drudgery.”

  1. As You Grow, You Will Want to Increase the Length of Time

  • Start with at least 15 minutes of Bible reading and 15 min of Prayer
  • Each week, extend the time a little further
  • If you want to benefit from your time with God, it has to be quality time that isn’t rushed.

  1. Incorporate fasting to empower your prayer times for special needs.

*Live-in Students, please discuss with your counselor if you’d like to fast for more than 24 hours.
